Rosamond Gifford Zoo (Syracuse)
Located just a short drive from the eastern edge of the lakes, this zoo is a premier destination for families. It is beautifully walkable and manageable for little legs while still hosting over seven hundred animals. The indoor primate exhibit is a massive hit on humid or rainy days, and the outdoor Asian Elephant Preserve allows your kids to see these majestic giants up close. They also offer excellent educational graphics that explain ongoing global conservation efforts.
Seneca Park Zoo (Rochester)
Positioned just north of the region along the Genesee River, this zoo has undergone incredible expansions over the last few years. The A Step Into Africa exhibit brings you face-to-face with olive baboons, rhinoceroses, and lions. Kids absolutely love the underwater viewing areas where they can watch sea lions and penguins glide effortlessly through the water right in front of them.
The Farm Sanctuary (Watkins Glen)
If you are looking for an experience that focuses heavily on compassion and rescue, this beautiful shelter tucked away in Watkins Glen is a must-visit. It is home to hundreds of rescued farm animals, including cows, pigs, sheep, and turkeys. The Animal Adventure Park (Harpursville)
