When the thermometer climbs and the lake feels like a long drive and you need water and you need it now, splash pads are the answer. Free, easy, no lifeguard required, and entertaining for every age that still thinks running through a water jet at full speed is a reasonable life choice.
Here’s the complete regional rundown from Syracuse down through the Finger Lakes and into the Southern Tier.
Central New York: Syracuse and Surrounding Area
Central New York is actually one of the most splash-pad-rich corners of the state, with the city of Syracuse alone offering multiple options spread across its parks system.
Camillus Splash Pad 1 Pool Rd, Camillus, NY 13031
Clean, accessible, and well-maintained, the Camillus Splash Pad sits inside a broader recreational complex that gives families plenty to do before and after the water. The water features are designed for a range of ages, with younger kids tending to get the most out of the experience. Located in Onondaga County just west of Syracuse, it’s an easy stop for families across the metro area. Check with Camillus Parks and Recreation for current hours.
City of Syracuse Parks Splash Pads
The city of Syracuse runs splash pads at multiple parks throughout the five boroughs, including Comfort Tyler Park at 1100 Comstock Ave., Lewis Park at 305 Lewis Ave., McKinley Park at 351 W. Newell St., Onondaga Park Lower at 655 Onondaga Ave., Onondaga Park Upper at 301 Crossett St., Schiller Park at 1099 Oak St., and Wilson Park at 1117 S. McBride St. Most of these activate on hot days and are free to use. Call the Syracuse Department of Parks ahead of time on borderline weather days to confirm the water is running.
Breitbeck Park 91 Lake St., Oswego, NY
Breitbeck Park in Oswego adds a lakeside spray option for families in Oswego County. The combination of Lake Ontario views and a splash pad is a genuinely good summer afternoon in Oswego.
Lysander Park Smokey Hollow Road, Baldwinsville, NY
Lysander Park in Baldwinsville offers splash pad access right in the heart of a community that also happens to sit along the Erie Canal. Pair the splash pad with a boat tour (more on that below) for a full Baldwinsville day.
The Finger Lakes
Stewart Park Splash Pad 1 James L. Gibbs Drive, Ithaca (Cayuga Lake)
Stewart Park in Ithaca has a splash pad right on the edge of Cayuga Lake, making it one of the most complete family park experiences in the region. Playground, splash pad, lake access, picnic tables, and a restored carousel all in one spot. This is the Finger Lakes splash pad that has it all around it.
Seneca Lake State Park Spray Park Geneva, NY
The spray park at Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva is one of the most popular in the region, and it earns it. Large, well-maintained, and surrounded by the full amenities of a New York State Park: beach access on Seneca Lake, playgrounds, disc golf, open fields, and those extraordinary lake views. Weekday mornings are the move for shorter lines and easier parking.
Lakeside Park Watkins Glen, NY
The Watkins Glen village splash pad at Lakeside Park sits right near the harbor and Seneca Lake’s southern tip. Easy to pair with a morning at Watkins Glen State Park gorge trail and an afternoon cooling down in the spray park after the hike.
Kershaw Park 5 Lakeshore Dr., Canandaigua
Kershaw Park on Canandaigua Lake has spray features, a sandy beach, a playground, and free admission. It is genuinely one of the best full family day destinations in Ontario County. Pack a lunch, let the kids alternate between the spray features and the lake, and stay as long as everyone is happy.
Southern Tier: Binghamton and Beyond
Columbus Park Splash Pad 9 Columbus Park East, Binghamton, NY
Columbus Park in Binghamton is a hidden gem of a park with a neat, practical splash pad where the whole family can enjoy running around and cooling off. Kids navigate the holes in the grid where the water pours from the ground to avoid getting sprayed, which turns the whole experience into an active game. Relaxed, community-grounded, and a solid option for families in Broome County.
CFJ Park 98 CFJ Blvd., Johnson City, NY
CFJ Park in Johnson City serves the Johnson City and Endicott corridor with splash pad access in the greater Binghamton metro area.
Elmira Riverfront Park Splash Pad Elmira, NY
The Chemung River waterfront in downtown Elmira has splash pad access as part of its riverside park development, convenient for families across the Corning-Elmira corridor.
Brand Park Splash Pad (Coming Soon) Elmira, NY
Brand Park in Elmira is in the process of adding a brand new splash pad to replace the historic pool that closed in 2006, funded through federal American Rescue Plan dollars. Check the City of Elmira’s Facebook page for an opening announcement this summer.
Tips for Any Splash Pad Visit
Bring two towels per kid and a change of clothes for yourself as well.
Water shoes are worth the dollars. Splash pad surfaces do get hot in direct sun and can have uneven textures that make barefoot running uncomfortable.
Most city-operated splash pads in the Syracuse system activate when temperatures hit 80 degrees. When the weather is borderline, call the parks department or check social media before driving over.
Sunscreen before you get there, in the parking lot, before anyone has a chance to run toward the water. 💦
